N. R. Narayana Murthy recently said that there is a tyranny of coaching institutions in India, which is no surprise. Economically the share of the education sector in India was 91.7 Billion USD in 2018, which has risen to 117 Billion USD in 2020 and continues to expand. The coaching industry alone contributes approximately 3.5 billion USD to this, which is huge considering there are various types of educational institutes in the country, including schools, colleges etc.
If we take time to think about what causes this issue, one fundamental issue we can pinpoint to the stereotype among Indian parents that any courses other than medicine or engineering are futile and a waste of time. So the parents are ready to disburse lakhs on luck to see if they will crack the entrance exams for these courses.
Although this gave rise to the curse which affected our society coaching centres. 2 reasons, why I think, coaching institutes are a menace to society, are enumerated below:
1. High costs: Coaching centres can be expensive, which can be a significant issue for students from low-income families. Some coaching centres charge exorbitant fees that are not commensurate with the quality of their services, which can put an undue financial strain on students and their families. This can cause equality, inequity and disparity in education.
2. Pressure and stress: Coaching centres can create a highly competitive environment, which can lead to increased stress and pressure among students. This can be particularly problematic for students who are already struggling academically or emotionally. Many students end their lives unable to cope with the pressure they receive from coaching institutions.
Is there a solution, personally if you ask me, the only way out is we need to scrap all the competitive exams like CUET, NEET and JEE. Rather an equitable solution like a free and fair interview should be done so that the aptitude and attitude of every student can be tested rather than how much a student can memorize and vomit out on the paper.
